Here is a technique to have a more invisible applique. I'm never quite satisfied with just zig zagging along the edge, and decided to try it this way on my dresden quilt. It does take a little time, but I'm loving the result.
First, come up from the back through the fold of whatever you're appliqueing.
Go straight back down after you come up, right next to where you came up.
Bring your needle up 1/4 inch down from your first point, through the fold. Repeat all the way around.

And this is the first time one of my girls has help up a quilting thing so I could take a picture of it. This is a big moment. :)
